RFID tags are available in different forms and with different electronic features depending on how they are intended to be used. Low Frequency and High Frequency passive tags have a low cost of implementation but relatively short read ranges.

UHF rfid tags (such as this selection of different styles available in one of the CoreRFID starter kits) can be read from greater distances, and can be mounted more successfully on a wider range materials. They are often more bulky though and more expensive.
Specialised tags are available for mounting on metal or on wood, for use in environments where there is a risk of explosion, for applications where tamper detection is a requirement or where the tag needs to be injected into an animal, for example.
RFID readers can be found in a wide range of configurations and costs from a less than £30 to £000's depending on the power required, the type of tag and the format of the reader.
