How RFID helped historic firm to improve client service

whslogoWH Scott & Son is a leading provider of lifting equipment and associated services with depots across England and Ireland. Based in County Antrim, the company has origins dating back 120 years and supplied the lifting equipment used by Harland and Wolff to build the Titanic.

WH Scott adopted the CheckedOK system after a major client identified a problem with safety inspections. While equipment was being inspected correctly by its own engineers, the client’s staff were not always sure which items had been inspected and, worse still, had not been able to prove it to the Health & Safety Executive.

After implementing CheckedOK, the results encouraged WH Scott to extend the system to other clients and it now has over 3,000 items of equipment.

The CheckedOK system has given WH Scott engineers an easier way of recording inspections and allows shopfloor staff at client companies to receive up-to-date information about the status of equipment.

When items are inspected, the details are transmitted to CheckedOK’s cloud-based database, which allows both WH Scott and its customers to keep track of which systems need to be checked and when. CoreRFID also added a feature allowing clients’ staff to check tags themselves, using simple red and green light signals.

The new system is more efficient for WH Scott’s engineers and provides better information for customers. CheckedOK has helped WH Scott to speed up inspections, improve the accuracy of data and offer a better service to clients. It is now a key part of its sales proposition to potential customers and an essential tool in delivering its services.

Ensuring safety and demonstrating compliance

CheckedOK’s interactive features have made it one of the most widely used inspection systems in the lifting industry. Tags are used to identify equipment and these are linked to a database containing details of the appropriate inspection regime and the results of inspections.

This data prompts engineers to carry out the correct checks for each item and save the results, then delivers the appropriate safety certificates online to staff and customers. Because CheckedOK is so widely used, many standard inspection questionnaires are already included which was important for WH Scott whose clients operate in a wide range of industries.

CheckedOK works with a range of tag types. WH Scott opted for RFID tags and, in particular, tough but small cable-tie tags. Tags can be quickly attached to a wide range of equipment and the bright colours are easily spotted by engineers. ATEX explosion-proof tags are also available.

Staff can check the safety status of equipment by simply scanning its tag with the CheckedOK app on an Android device with Bluetooth RFID readers. CheckedOK is also supported on the Apple iOS platform.

They can find out when equipment was last inspected, when its next inspection is due and what they need to do as a result of previous checks. The system also automatically generates inspection certificates in the required format, which can be accessed online and emailed to contacts to demonstrate compliance with safety standards.
